šŸŽļø Max Finds Something That... Isn't a Car?

But it has half the wheels and just as much power!

GOOD morning, dear readers. Happy Monday.

I hope we all had a very nice weekend.

How was mine, you ask? Swell! I spent it seeking as much shade and air conditioning as possible.

This meant cold coffee, duck pin bowling (the meta is throw the ball as hard as possible and hope it sends pins ricocheting into each other, aim is far secondary to that), and searching for a possible first motorcycle for my badass mom who just got her moto endorsement.

In that search, we visited Motorcycles of Charlotte, which had an awesome selection. I got to drool at some new Ducati Panigaleā€™s & BMW R18ā€™s, and to be honest, it re-ignited a latent motorcycle fever within me.

That love began with riding mini-dirtbikes as a wee lad, and followed me into my early 20s where I was daily commuting on my 2001 Ducati Monster 900 (one of the prettiest bikes on the road, in my correct opinion).

Anyways, Sunday I set out on my usual internet galivant and stumbled across todaysā€¦ vehicle. No, its not a car, but good god is it as powerful as one. Andā€¦ its about $100k more expensive than a NEW base BMW M3!

What Makes The Desmosedici RR So Cool?

  • Itā€™s one of the only STREET LEGAL MotoGP BIKES EVER

  • It has all the DUCATI RACING FANCINESS

  • This one is 15 YEARS OLD BUT IS STILL BRAND NEW

Todayā€™s Edition is brought to you by eBay Motors

But First, the Highlightsā€¦

THIS Desmosedici RR is being sold by a company called Chrome Temple. They seem to provide a democratized approach to super high value, investment-level vehicles. So, they source and purchase their very special collection of cars and motorcycles from various investment pools, wait for values to increase, and resell them at a profit.

What that means is that the Chrome Temple Desmosedici RR, which is special in and of itself (for reasons you shall soon learn, reader!), is particularly unique. It has ONE KILOMETER on the odometer. It is brand new. It may very well be the lowest mileage example of one of these bikes in the world, which is why they are asking such a large premium over the already hefty original asking price on these (~$72,500).

Itā€™s one of the only STREET LEGAL MotoGP BIKES EVER

Youā€™re all very smart and knowledgeable, as a rule. You all confirmed that by subscribing to the most entertaining newsletter automotive newsletter in the world before it was cool.

But, let me gather my papers and mosey up to the lectern for a moment, just in caseā€¦

WTF is MotoGP?

Basically, Formula One for motorcycles. Itā€™s perhaps the craziest motoring spectacle in the world with riders regularly exceeding 200mph and leaning into turns so much that they scrape their knees and elbows against the road (on purpose). Itā€™s an incredible display of skill and fearlessness. The driverā€™s seem to dare physics to punish them for attempting to take turns at the speeds they do.

Itā€™s wild stuff. Check this wreck from a couple years back (and unbelievably, its one where everyone walked away without injury):

Anyways, all that to say a MotoGP bike is a BEAST. Itā€™s a lot to handle, even for skilled riders. And back in 2006, Ducati became the first motorcycle company to offer a true copy of their competition MotoGP bike to the public, in street legal spec.

What that means isā€¦

This Desmosedici RR has nearly 200 horsepower, weighs only 425 pounds, goes 0-60 in 2.6 (TWO POINT SIX) seconds, and can hit a top speed of nearly 200mph.

And only 1500 were madeā€¦ ever. This is one of the most coveted Ducatiā€™s of all time. Itā€™s probably one of the most coveted motorcycles in GENERAL.

To the point where TOM (GODDAMN) CRUISE was the first guy to own one in the US.

It has all the DUCATI RACING FANCINESS

So, how does a motorcycle make that much power? What makes this thing a competitor in the MotoGP world?

Itā€™s probably easy to think that motorcycles are so fast because theyā€™re just lighter than cars. But Ducati isnā€™t sticking a stock Subaru BRZ engine (which also makes 200 horsepower) between your legs and calling it a day.

Desmosedici translates, roughly, to Desmodromic 16 which is a reference to the fact that this engine has 16 valves and uses Ducatiā€™s signature Desmodromic technology.

If youā€™re like me and have no idea what any of that means, let me be your Google Search result:

The Desmosediciā€™s engine is a 989cc four cylinder. It having 16 values means that, for each of those cylinders there are 2 air intake valves and 2 exhaust valves. The intake valves allow air & fuel into the cylinder, which then is ignited and creates the combustion that propels the engine. The exhaust valves effectively vent the gases created by that combustion.

The Desmodromic bit refers to the fact that the Ducatiā€™s valves are mechanically closed, rather than using a traditional spring. Without boring you too much, mechanically operated valves are better and let this Ducati rev to nearly 14000 RPM, double the amount you see in many cars on the road today.

And its not just the engine that makes this bike special, its also covered in carbon fiber, has a boujee Ohlins suspension, and lightweight/beautiful Marchesini Wheels.

Idk who Marchesini is, but apparently his wheels are pretty dope.

This one is 15 YEARS OLD BUT IS STILL BRAND NEW

YEAH. Like I said before, it legitimately has 1km on the clock. It still has factory plastic on it, and hasnā€™t ever had fuel in its tank or the battery installed.

And that is likely why Chrome Temple is asking $175,000 for this bike.

I did the math, and if you account for inflation the original asking price from Ducati for the Desmosedici was $105k. So theyā€™re betting someone pays $70k on top of that for the privilege of owning maybe the lowest mileage example left.

Howeverā€¦ I did some more online sleuthing and found another Desmosedici RR for sale. This other one was previously owned by IndyCar driver Graham Rahal, is asking $95,500, and has onlyā€¦ 258 miles on the clock.

That means if you buy this one from Chrome Temple, every mile you ride it (up to that 258 mile mark) is the same thing as BURNING THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS.

Wanna take your brand new Desmosedici RR to Bojangles, a 6 mile round trip?

Thatā€™s $1809.35 ($1800 for the mileage induced depreciation, and $9.35 for the Cajun Chicken Biscuit Combo).

So, if you have the cash reserves to swallow that chicken sandwich knowing it cost you nearly two grand BUY THIS BIKE. Andā€¦ invest in MaxFindsCars so I can spend more on ads.
